feb 8, 1887 - Dawes Act
Description:
The Dawes Act of 1887 gave the President the permission to divide up Native American land for individual Native Americans. Those who lived on the land for 25 years and adopted a "civilized" way of life would be eligible for US citizenship. This event represents American and National Identity because Americans began to grant citizenship oppurtunities to other groups of people and wanted to assimilate them into their way of life.
