Description:

He was an African-American slave born on the Virginia plantation of Benjamin Turner, who allowed him to be instructed in reading, writing, and religion. He led a two-day rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Southampton County, Virginia on August 21, 1831. The rebellion caused the death of approximately sixty white men, women and children.
