sep 6, 1937 - Anita Desai
Description:
Anita Desai is an Indian writer with a Bengal father and a German mother. She writes, in her early novels, about the struggle of women to find a place for themselves in Indian society. She also deals with western stereotypes views of India. In "The Village by the Sea" (1982) she describes the conflict between rural life and industrial interests in India.
In "Fasting, Feasting" (1999) Desai contrasts American and Indian culture as well as female and male roles.
“Isn't it strange how life won't flow, like a river, but moves in jumps, as if it were held back by locks that are opened now and then to let it jump forwards in a kind of flood?”
― Anita Desai
