may 28, 1997 - Complain against
Joe Camel
Description:
After a many health associations, the surgeon general, and 27 state attorneys general were unsuccessful in their lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds, they rebounded with yet another complaint in 1997. It was abundantly clear that the corporation was intentionally targeting children with their campaign. This resulted in an order to "cease and desist from advertising to children [R.J.R.] Camel brand cigarettes through the use of the images or themes relating or referring to Old Joe, Smooth Character or Joe Camel..." This was an incredible accomplishment in the fight against harmful children's ads.
