jan 1, 1952 - Big Todd and Rootie Kazootie
Description:
This commercial for Powerhouse candy bars was one of many in the trend of marketing directly to children. Here, actor Todd Russell and famous hand puppet character Rootie Kazootie promote the unhealthy mass consumption of candy in exchange for a "Lucky Spot ring." This gives children an incentive to buy and eat the product, for growing up in a consumer world leads them to a strong sense of greed and materialism.
Although the flaws of these foods were known, little was done to prevent the obesity crisis we face today. At long last, regulations were passed in 2005 to limit the amount of 'junk food' ads directed at children. In the next four years, there was a 37% decrease in ads for products with high salt, fat, and sugar contents with this intent.
