nov 8, 1932 - Roosevelt's First Election

Description:

The United States presidential election of 1932 was the thirty-seventh presidential election. This election occurred during the times of the Great Depression. Roosevelt united the democratic party around him, campaigning on the failures of the Hoover administration. Holding “fireside chats” on the radio Roosevelt talked about promises of recovery with a "New Deal" for the American people. Held on Tuesday, November 8, 1932 Republican President Herbert Hoover was defeated easily by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Governor of New York. The election was the ending of the era from about 1896 to 1932 which was dominated by Republicans. His enactment of New Deal programs and reforms redefined the roles that the federal government held in the lives of American citizens. Roosevelt went on to be re-elected four other times.
