jan 1, 1866 - Rise of the KKK
Description:
The Klu Klux Klan also known as the KKK emerged in southern america following the Civil War, founded in 1866. It started as a secret society filled with masked individuals to uphold white supremacy. Their goals were to ensure that the newly emancipated african americans would never have access to political, civil, or economic rights. The federal government neglected to guarantee rights to its african american citizens leaving no opposition to this new terrorist group. This allowed the KKK to use violent force such as torture and murder-usually through lynching towards individuals who were black or anyone who challenged their power. They wore white robes and masks to “protect” their identity although many were well known and powerful white males in society. They instilled terror and fear all throughout the south.
