jul 21, 1925 - Scopes Trial

Description:

The scopes trial also known as the scopes monkey trial occurred in July of 1925. It was a legal trial between the state of Tennessee and John Thomas Scopes for the violation of the Butler Act. The Butler Act was a bill that made teachings of Charles Darwin's controversial theory of evolution in schools illegal. The trial had two opposing lawyers William Jennings Bryan, the prosecutor, and Clarence Darrow, the defendant. The trial publicized the clashing of ideals with modernists who believe that evolution does not oppose religion against traditional fundamentalists who believe that the Bible was the basis of all knowledge. Scopes was found guilty and had to pay a 100$ fine.
