In september of 1914 France was able to halt German advances. After a tiring 4 years of fighting, Germany with limited manpower and supplies, finally surrendered to the Allies on November 11th of 1918. Because of new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people, both soldiers and civilians were dead, However, it was not until the treaty of versailles in January of 1919 was the war officially over.
