Abraham Lincoln, was the 16th president of the United States, as of march 4th, 1861. He was a self-taught lawyer, legislator and vocal opponent of slavery. Lincoln was elected shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War and proved to be a great military strategist as well as a strong leader. His Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for slavery’s abolition, while his Gettysburg Address stands as one of the most famous speeches in American history. In 1864 he ran for reelection and successfully beat General George McClellan. It was a great victory, however, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth and died on April 15, 1865.
