Description:
The Indian Removal Act was signed by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Native American tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their lands.This act led to the Trail of Tears where the federal government forced native indians to leave their homelands and walk thousands of miles to a specially designated “Indian territory” across the Mississippi River. This difficult and deadly journey killed thousands.
