mar 4, 1801 - Jefferson Presidency
Description:
Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence and the third U.S. president, as of March 4th 1801. He served for a second term after the election of 1804. During his two terms in office he was best known for, the U.S. purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France, effectively doubling the size of the country. Jefferson also implemented the Embargo of 1807. The act closed U.S. ports to foreign trade, was unpopular with Americans, hurt the U.S. economy, and was repealed in 1809. Thomas Jefferson chose not to run for a third term and left the office in 1808.
