may 14, 1607 - Jamestown
Description:
The Jamestown Colony was the first permanent English settlement in North America, located near what is now Williamsburg in Virginia. The colonists selected this site because ships could pull up close in deep water for easy loading and unloading. The location was also unoccupied, and easy to defend, because it was joined to the mainland by a narrow strip. Jamestown was established on May 14th, 1607 and Edward-Maria Wingfield, a major investor in the venture, became the colony’s first president.
