He set off to sail three times before finally landing in America. He first left on August 3, 1492 on an expedition that was highly successful in bringing back goods from the Bahamas, Cuba, and set up a settlement on Haiti. He was looked on highly in Spain when he returned, and was set out to sail again in September of 1493 with a fleet of 17 ships. He found the colonists murdered and came back with less goods. Queen Isabella set him off for the third time out of greed, Columbus left in May of 1498 with a 6 ship fleet. Finally On August 1st, 1498, the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and his explorers landed in the Americas. He landed on what is now known as Venezuela on the Paria Peninsula and named it Spain.
