Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, writer, playwright, and columnist. He was born in Missouri and moved to New York as a child to begin his career. He is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance in New York. Both of Langston’s grandparents, on his father’s side, were enslaved African Americans, but both of the grandparents on his mother’s side were white slave owners in Kentucky.

In this poem, Langston connects himself with his ancestors showing that, he too, has felt the pain of racism in America.
