Description:

This was a court case issued by a slave, Dred Scott from the slave state of Missouri, but resided the the free state of Illinois. When he returned to Missouri he filed a suit for his freedom claiming that his residency in free state made him free. This case resulting in the ruling that any African American free or slave were not American citizens, and therefore could not sue in federal court. Dred Scott was still not a free man.
