Description:
In 1793, Eli Whitney (born within the United States)created the cotton gin, and in the following year (1794), he patented the cotton gin. The cotton gin was a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. By 1859, cotton accounted for seventy-five percent of the world supply and two-thirds of all American exports. In fact, cotton production increased from five-hundred percent to one-thousand percent within the nation. Despite its success, the cotton gin increased slavery significantly. Slavery increased because the cotton gin allowed cotton to become more accessible, so farmers wanted more and more slaves. Although, Eli Whitney was extremely clever and he is credited as a pioneer of American manufacturing.
