Description:

The Compromise of 1850 was a last minute attempt at holding the Union together. The Compromise stated that California would be admitted as a free state, the slave trade in Washington D.C. would be abolished, popular sovereignty would be put in place in the Mexican Cession, and the North would institute a stricter fugitive slave law. All of these rules were made in attempt to keep both the North and South happy and ultimately eliminate the possibility of a Civil War.
