mar 20, 1852 - Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Description:

Uncle Tom’s Cabin, also known as Life Among the Lowly, is an anti-slavery novel written by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The novel had a profound effect on the attitudes towards African-Americans and slavery within the United States. Stowe sold over three-hundred-thousand copies in the first year, and sold two million copies by 1862. Her book was even banned within the South, and anyone who possessed the novel could be severely punished. This novel was a cause of the civil war; as Abraham Lincoln stated, “Oh, so you are the women that started the war?”
