On July 21, 1861, Confederate and Union forces met at Massachusetts Junction, Virginia for the first major battle of the Civil War. The battle began when thirty-five thousand troops marched from the federal capital, Washington D.C., to strike on a force of about twenty thousand Confederate troops near a small river named Bull Run. After fighting defensively for most of the day, Confederate troops were able to push the Union force back into a chaotic retreat towards Washington. The Southern victory gave them a great bode of confidence and surprised many Northerners.
