(December 24, 1865):The KKK was founded on December 24, 1865 by six confederate veterans in Tennessee in opposition to reconstruction following the civil war in the South. Unlike the earlier stages of the Klan, the KKK broadened its hate and began targeting Catholics and Jews along with African Americans. KKK membership surged in the 1920s reaching over eight million klansmen. The KKK devised a strategy called the “decade” in which each klan member was required to recruit at least ten people to vote for KKK affiliated candidates. The klan was very successful with this strategy and it was enough to control many state governments. This was known as the “invisible empire”
