Description:
After 4 years of ruthless bloodshed and hardship, the Confederate army was drained of resources, soldiers, and energy. On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee met General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox courthouse in Virginia to surrender to the Union army. Following the surrender, the Union was to be restored and rebuilt.
