apr 30, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase

Description:

The Louisiana Purchase was the largest and most cheap land purchase in the history of the United States. At the turn of the nineteenth century, Americans were moving farther westward, and everyone wanted more places to live and more livestock for their farms. The United States wanted more land, and they yearned to acquire the Louisiana Territory. Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to France in hopes of getting Napoleon to consider the agreement. In fact, Napoleon offered to sell the 828,000 square miles of land, and Monroe quickly accepted and offered fifteen million dollars in return. With one transaction, the size of the nation doubled and the landscape of the United States would be forever changed.
