Christopher Columbus set sail westward on an exploration expedition on August 3rd, 1492 from Spain with a desire to acquire a faster, more convenient route to Asia. He landed in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, although Columbus thought he was in India. As a result, the native people that Columbus discovered there were called the “Indians”. The initial interaction between the native people’ and the Spaniards resulted in the exchange of goods such as crops, weapons and unfortunately, disease. Later on, the Spaniards began to exploit and oppress the natives for free labor and resources. This lead to a large scale system of slavery and exploitation of people due to race.Added to timeline:
