jul 21, 1925 - Scopes Trial
Description:
The Scopes “Monkey” Trial took place in Tennessee. John Scopes was a science teacher who was arrested for teaching evolution. This was controversial because the theory of evolution contradicts Biblical teaching. Clarence Darrow was the defense lawyer; he was opposed on the prosecuting side by William Jennings Bryan, who later became president. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100. To this day, the case represents the increasing tensions between science and religion.
