jan 16, 1919 - Eighteenth Amendment

Description:

The Eighteenth Amendment banned the sale, manufacturing, and transportation of alcohol. It was petitioned for largely by women and conservative Christians who believed that drunkenness was a sin and the cause of crime in the United States. Ironically, the ban of liquor created an illegal industry through speakeasies and bootleggers, which allowed for the rise of gangs in America. It was repealed by the Twenty-First Amendment in 1933.
