may 6, 1882 - Chinese Exclusion Act

Description:

The Chinese Exclusion Act was signed by President Chester A. Arthur. It was essentially a ban against the Chinese; it was the first immigration ban issued by the United States that targeted a specific ethnic group. The Act was only supposed to last for ten years, but it was renewed and then made permanent in 1902. It wasn’t repealed until almost fifty years later.
