jan 1, 1863 - Emancipation Proclamation
Description:
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in the third year of the Civil War, stating that all slaves in the South would henceforth be free. He did so for moral as well as economic reasons, and displayed his authority over Southern states. It was revolutionary for the African-American community, but there is still a long way to go before we achieve equality.
