dec 1, 1857 - Dred Scott v Sanford
Description:
In this case, a former slave moved with his master to a free state and tried to sue his owner after being denied his freedom. It went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that African-Americans were not citizens and therefore didn’t have the right to sue. This ruling was overturned by the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth amendments years later.
