jan 17, 1893 - The U.S. Gains Control of Hawaii
Description:
Hawaii was originally a sovereign nation. The United States wanted an island to build a naval base that could act as a coal station between America and the Philippines. So, they manipulated Hawaii’s economy through heightened tariffs on sugar, their main export. Essentially, they forced them to become a state in order to preserve their nation. They also staged an uprising to help overthrow the monarchy.
