may 12, 1870 - May 12, 1870 : The Canadian Government Passes The Manitoba Act
Description:
Due to the Metis-led Red River Resistance, the Canadian Government passes the Manitoba Act on May 12, 1870. The act establishes a lot of things. Firstly, it established Manitoba as a bilingual province that supports both languages of English and French. Secondly, it also establishes Manitoba as a province where there are educational rights for Catholics and Protestants. Lastly, the Manitoba Act "guaranteed" the Metis land rights, specifying that the Metis would receive more than 500,000 hectares of land as well as the farms that they had established on the Red River. The Metis were happy that the Canadian Government finally listened to their demands. Below is a picture of a section of the Manitoba Act.
