jun 7, 1991 - Slovenia and Croatia declare independence

Description:

Slovenia and Croatia declare independence. In response to Slovenia, the Yugoslav army responds with force and over a 10-day period the two countries are at war. About 100 people are killed before the European Union brokers a ceasefire. The Yugoslav army withdraws. War breaks out immediately upon Croatia’s declaration of independence. The Serbian army joins forces with Croatian Serbs in the east of the country to expel Croats. By the end of the year nearly one-third of the country is under Serb control. During this time the Serbs create the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina. Located on Croatia’s sovereign territory, it is not recognised by the international community.
