On July 4, 1776, the United States gained its independence from Great Britain. Even while the Revolutionary War was surfacing, many people did not want complete independence from Great Britain and found those ideals to be a bit extreme. In 1776, colonies voted on whether or not the would like to be completely independent from Britain. Drafted by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence emphasized the ideas by which the nation was founded including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In accordance with the Bill of Rights and Constitution, the Declaration of Independence is one of the three most important documents created in American history.
