What prompted the Great Awakening was the further development of the Enlightenment and dissatisfaction with social and economic developments in American life. The traditional ideals of the Protestant religion suggest that one may earn their way into heaven if they worked hard enough. The new group of preachers believed that all were equal in the eyes of Christ. This became very controversial because many people were set on tradition and did not understand this new way of Christianity.
