may 13, 1607 - Jamestown

Description:

Jamestown was the host of the first successful English settlement in the New World (present day Virginia). Founded by the Virginia Company of London, Jamestown originated with 104 colonists that had different ideas surrounding the way they should settle. There were a few difficulties that the colonists faced including disease, lack of food, and bad relations with the Native Americans. Eventually, Jamestown proved to be a successful colonization because it became dependent on its tobacco resources and relations with the Natives. Forty-four years later, this would go on to affect colonies that developed because of the regulations that were placed on colonists as to where and with whom goods could be exchanged.
