aug 9, 1974 - Watergate Incident
Description:
The Watergate hotel, home to the offices of the Democratic National Committee, was broken into by 5 men with listening and recording devices. These men were found to have been connected to a widespread illegal intelligence operation designed to get information about the DNC and Democrats. The evidence eventually connected back to sitting US president Richard Nixon, who was accused of having spoken and planned these events in the White house. He would not turn over tapes that his accusers said contained damming evidence. He was subsequently impeached and days later resigned and was eventually convicted of obstruction of justice, although he was pardoned by Gerald Ford. This incident in infamous and a disgrace to Nixon and all those involved. It also created problems of distrust between the people and politicians.
