James Meehan was an Irish-born school teacher and surveyor. Sentenced to transportation for his involvement in the outlawed Society of United Irishmen prior to the 1798 Irish Rebellion. James Meehan helped in surveying few parts of Sydney. Meehan granted pardon in 1806 because of his surveying works. Meehan was granted several lands till 1809. The future Macquarie House is located on these lands
