jan 28, 1986 - Challenger Disaster

Description:

On the 28th of January 1986, NASA planned to launch one of their rockets into orbit to set up different tracking modules that would track Halley's Comet, as well as provide educational broadcasts for a project on teaching while in space. On board the shuttle would be Francis R. Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith ResnikGregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. McAuliffe was supposed to have been the teacher who would broadcast herself teaching in space live to her students and kids across the world. Many people were excited about the Challenger mission, and tuned in to watch it on television. However, instead of tuning in to a space shuttle exiting the Earth, after approximately 73 seconds after lifting off, the Challenger shuttle exploded, killing everybody on board. Many people across the nation, including many children, had tuned in to watch the space shuttle launch. The disaster resulted in an overhaul of NASA's safety techniques as well as new designs and the halting of launches for three years.
