jul 5, 91 BC - Nehor

Description:

An Anti-Christ that introduced priestcrafts among the Nephites. Nehor was a large man, noted for his strength.
He taught the people that the priests and teachers should be supported by the people, and flattered them with the doctrine that everyone would eventually be saved.
By all indication he had been active for several years as he had established a church with regular worship services, and had convinced his followers to give him money for his support.
It is not unlikely that he was influenced by Alma and the sons of Mosiah before their conversion.

In the year 91 he contended with the man Gideon, who had been the adviser to King Limhi, regarding the scriptures. Gideon was able to withstand his words, and so, in a rage, Nehor attacked him with the sword and killed him.
At the time Gideon was a teacher in the church, and the members who were present at this event took Nehor, bound him, and carried him before Alma, who had recently been made Chief Judge.
While Nehor defended himself with boldness, he was condemned for his actions by Alma. He was taken to a hill where it says he died an ignominious death, most likely being hung.

Even though Nehor was executed the church he had established continued for many years and became known as the Order of the Nehors.
