jan 21, 1793 - Execution of King Louis XVI
Description:
The trial and then execution of Louis XVI on January 21 1793 caused a shock wave across France and around the world. Kings had never been executed by their own people before except for a few rare occasions. Most kings had been assassinated, overthrown and toppled by military defeat but not executed by the people of his own country. His execution caused shock and condemnation around the world, most notably in Britain who believed the French revolution had gone into anarchy.
