jan 13, 1944 - Women fill more than on-fourth of Milwaukee County's industrial jobs.

Description:

Rural migrants and urban minorities helped to keep the war plants humming, but there were simply not enough of them to ease the labor shortage that materialized in 1942. A sign of things to come appeared in October, when the Falk Company's board allocated $50,000 to build washrooms "for possible women shop employees." By the end of 1943, after an intensive recruiting drive that included door-to-door solicitation, women filled more than one-fourth of Milwaukee County's industrial jobs. Rosie the Riveter had found her niche.

Although they were paid less for the same work than their male counterparts, women were prized for their dexterity and attention to detail.
