mar 2, 119 BC - Church Reforms

Description:

After the business of settling the peoples of Zeniff and Alma around Zarahemla was complete, King Mosiah granted to Alma that he might organize the church throughour the land.

Why it was necessary for Alma to do this is not specified. We know that under King Benjamin there were many prophets (all unnamed) that helped to bring the people to righteousness and peace.
However, by the time that Alma comes to Zarahemla the church had somehow fallen into a kind of chaos. There also seems to have been no one among the people of Zarahemla who was of higher authority than Alma, for if there were they would have been the ones to organize the church.

But, regardless of the reasons, Alma organized the people much as we are today, into wards and stakes. Over each he ordained priests and teachers, and set up regular weekly times for the people to meet and be taught the gospel (much like our Sunday meetings).
