Description:

In 1819, Missouri requested admittance to the union as a slave state. This request presented a big problem because it would upset the balance of free to slave states in the union, thus giving slave states more power. In order to solve this issue, congressman Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise. It proposed that Missouri would enter as a slave state while Maine would enter as a free state.
