Recording a song on two tape recorders at the same time, then slowing down on of the tape recorders by placing you finger on the tape. One of the first hit songs was on the 1967 British group, Itchycoo Park by Small Faces.

To get flanging sound the delay should be less than 1ms to 5ms for chorus delay should be 5ms to 25ms and for phase shift there should be no delay.

So, to achieve this effect the second recording should be delayed and sped up so the second recording is slowing down and speeding up as its playing with the original recording creating that whoosh sound.
