Totalitarianism has many similarities to AUTHORITARIANISM as they both enforce strict obedience to those in power. However, in order to maintain this control, totalitarian governments are known to use many techniques such as PURGES, CONTROLLED PARTICIPATION, INDOCTRINATION, SCAPEGOATING, HISTORICAL REVISIONISM or NEGATIONISM, CULT OF PERSONALITY, and having a COMMAND ECONOMY. Joseph Stalin is a widely known Totalitarian ruler who used these techniques to control Russia.
