aug 2, 1990 - Persian Gulf War
Description:
In 1988, the war between Iran and Iraq ended without a clear winner. The U.S. had supported the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, throughout the war. Hussein tried to gain more control of the Middle East and ease his war debt by taking over the oil-rich country of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. President Bush feared that Hussein taking over Kuwait would threaten American oil supplies, thereby damaging the American economy, and created a coalition which set a deadline for Hussein to remove his troops from Kuwait or they will attack him. When Hussein failed to comply, the Persian Gulf War began in January 1991.
