mar 29, 1900 - Lizzie Kander, a Jewish immigrant to Milwaukee,
publishes her favorite recipes in The Settlement
Cookbook.
Description:
The Jewish Settlement opened in a house on Fifth Street in 1900. It served roughly 1,300 people each week with a broad array of activities: children's clubs, sewing and cooking classes, an evening English-language school, athletic programs, literary circles, discussion groups, and a Sabbath school. The cooking classes were the province of a legendary figure named Lizzie Kander. In 1901 she published her favorite recipes in an easy-to-use guide called The Settlement Cookbook. Thirty-four printings and 2 million copies later, Mrs. Kander's cookbook is still a reliable font of recipes for cooks of all backgrounds and a welcome source of revenue for Jewish charities.
