During the golden age of Pericles. starting in 461, new reforms are initiated by Pericles that bring the Athenian government to a direct democracy. One major reform included the payment of nearly all public servants, which allowed the poorest of citizens to run for office. The most important reform of Pericles's democracy was that citizens could vote directly for issues instead of having representatives vote for them. This is why Pericles government is known as a, "Direct Democracy". Due to the stronger government, Athens grows an empire that controls the Delian league, beautifies their city, and creates an age of prosperity in Athens
