dec 20, 574 BC - Solon Begins Reforms
Description:
20 years later, Solon is finally given more legislative power. He strongly desires to dismiss the aristocracy system, but decides to accomplish this through reform and not tyranny. Solon is able to put forth legendary legislation such as freeing debt slaves, and decreasing poverty by giving jobs to former slaves such as minting of coins and trading of olives, and much more. These initiatives lowered poverty in Athens and improved overall life. Most importantly Solon gets rid of the Athenian aristocracy, but this not quite a democracy yet, since the government is now controlled just by a broader range of wealthy people.
