Sicilian's begin arriving in Milwaukee in large numbers. Industries plus immigrants equaled growth. The city's population more than quadrupled in thirty years, rising from 45,246 in 1860 to 204,468 in 1890. Milwaukee climbed through the ranks of American's cities from twentieth place to sixteenth, lagging Detroit but leading Newark by a comfortable margin. As the city got bigger, it also got busier. The number of trains departing on an average day exploded from 12 in 1866 to 123 in 1886.
